8 Tips for Enjoying an Outdoor Movie with Kids

1. Hype the kids up

Look up fun facts related to the movie, find themed activities/crafts, read the book adaptation, or watch behind-the-scenes clips on how the movie was made. Are you going to watch a musical? Blast the soundtrack in the car on the way there!

2. Know what time the movie starts

Most outdoor movies begin at dusk (that’s around 8pm during the summer) but often times, there’s events that go on beforehand. Some places start letting you in early to find a good spot, so plan accordingly!

3. Make it comfy

You won’t be in reclining theater seats, so bring whatever you’ve got to make it comfy. Pack your biggest blanket to lay on and more blankets to use when it gets a little chilly. Don’t forget low-back chairs, floor pillows, and anything else your family will need to feel comfy outdoors.

Blanket Tip: Bring a tarp to put under your blanket to keep it from getting wet from dewy grass.

4. Pack a picnic and stock up on snacks

Some places will have food trucks available, but if you’ve got picky eaters your best bet is to pack your own food. And don’t forget the snacks and drinks! You’ve gotta have yummy treats to snack on while watching a movie.

Fun snack ideas:

  • Popcorn
  • Candy
  • Fruit
  • Chips
  • Frozen yogurt
  • Trail mix

Don’t forget napkins, wet wipes, and a small bag for trash!

5. Pre-movie entertainment

You got there early, you found a great spot, now what? Keep the kids entertained before the movie starts. Since the family is already out and together, it’s a great opportunity to play some games.

Entertainment ideas:

  • Card games (Uno, Go Fish, Crazy Eights, Speed, Old Maid, Phase 10, etc.)
  • Frisbee
  • Hacky sack
  • Spoons
  • Charades
  • Cup stacking
  • Trivia
  • Simple board games (Jenga, Connect Four, Bananagrams, etc.)
  • Simon Says

6. Get into character

Make the night extra special by dressing up along with the movie playing. Dust off the old Halloween costumes, make your own, or wear themed t-shirts.

7. Use the bathroom before the movie begins

Once the movie starts, the venue might become crowded or it’ll be too dark to make your way to the bathroom.

8. Bug repellant

You don’t want pesky mosquitos ruining your night out!
